Philadelphia, the largest city in Pennsylvania and seat of Philadelphia County (coterminous), is located in the southeastern part of the state at the junction of the Schuylkill and Delaware Rivers. Philadelphia, the City of Brotherly Love, was settled in 1681 by Capt. William Markham, who was sent out by his cousin, William Penn. Penn arrived the following year. In the period before the American Revolution, the city outstripped all others in the colonies in education, arts, science, industry, and commerce. In 1774–1776, the First and Second Continental Congresses met in Philadelphia; and, from 1781–1783, the city was the capital of the U.S. under the Articles of Confederation. In 1790, it became the nation's capital under the Constitution and remained so until the seat of the federal government moved to Washington in 1800. The city abounds in landmarks of early American history, including Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell.

At the heart of the Philadelphia region, Center City is the premier location for culture, fine dining, theater, entertainment and shopping. Center City is also a great place to live, offering:

  • Neighborhoods with old-world streets that provide many convenient and attractive ways to walk to work.
  • A wide range of houses, apartments and condominiums from the 18th and 19th century townhouses to converted lofts to modern high rise buildings.
  • Historic architecture and parks and historic landmarks that preserve the best of the past.
  • Amenities from health clubs to supermarkets to world-class educational and medical facilities, to fabulous restaurants and retail stores.
